Sale of logistics sites brings Maersk presence in Russia to an end

Maersk has finally sold its last two Russian logistics sites, after almost a year.

The sites in St Petersburg and Novorossiysk were closed on Friday following a deal with IG Finance Development to acquire the facilities.

Maersk chief commercial officer Karsten Kildahl said: “We’re pleased to have found a new owner and execute on our decision to divest all assets in the country.

“Throughout the divestment process, we have as a company felt a strong responsibility towards the remaining 50 employees at the two sites, and we are happy that they will be offered employment as part of the new setup.”

According to reports, Cyprus-registered IG Finance has an agreement with Russian food importer Arosa to operate the sites, a deal that will see the Novorossiysk depot providing some 1,500 teu of capacity, while the 23,500sq metre facility in St Petersburg will cater for chilled and frozen shipments.

Maersk announced last March it would discontinue its Russian operations, with its final service completed in May, abandoning some 20,000 containers in the country. Last August, it announced it had sold its 30.75% stake in Russian port operator Global Ports Investment to major domestic operator Delo Group.

Even as the latest divestiture brings the curtain down on its Russian operations, there are a few outstanding assets Maersk needs to sell, a spokesperson said the Danish conglomerate still needed to find buyers for four tugboats operating under its Svitzer brand.

Survey meant to identify Florida emergency truck parking needs

Two Florida universities are conducting a survey of truckers as part of efforts to identify safe truck parking during dangerous weather.

The study, conducted by the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida and the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University, will identify potential opportunities and challenges associated with identifying potential emergency parking locations throughout Florida to ensure the safety of drivers and their trucks during severe weather events.

Severe weather events are defined as any dangerous weather event with the potential to cause damage or serious disruption, such as a hurricane, heavy precipitation, fog, fire smoke, or high winds. These events may lead to unsafe driving conditions, necessitating a truck driver to stop driving and find a safe emergency parking location until they are able to resume normal operations.

The survey defines a safe emergency truck parking location as a site designated and reserved for parking trucks during a severe weather event until the drivers can resume normal operations. These locations will be in support of the existing public and private truck parking network. These locations will be available and free for any truck driver until they can resume normal operations.

The researcher said, "As a professional with first-hand experience in the trucking industry in Florida, your participation in this survey will help us identify and prioritize potential emergency truck parking locations to ensure the safety of drivers and their trucks during severe weather events."

The survey does not include any questions about your personal or institutional identity. The collected data will be summarized for reporting purposes

Ocean carriers are agreeing on huge discounts for the new deals as contract rates are trending towards spot rates. Although many of the contracts are yet to be finalized, it is believed that they will be fixed around current spot prices.

This prosaic state of the freight market is forcing companies to scrape their vessels. MSC has joined this list for the first time in almost 4 years. However, it is most likely that overcapacity is inevitable because the new orderbook is huge and demand is stagnating. This is especially true when the desire to be the largest company overtops. Despite all risks, MSC orders another 10 dual-fuel 11,500 teu in China.

Non-operating containership owners are experiencing drops in daily hires. Meanwhile, they hope that the break up of the 2M alliance will have a positive impact on them due to a drop in network efficiency.

Shippers that count on lower rates for LTL will be probably disappointed. Although the prices have softened a bit, overall, the LTL sector performed much better than truckload and intermodal providers thanks to continuing pricing discipline by the carriers.

Port Iskenderun is suffering critical damages after the earthquake. Companies temporarily suspended new export and import booking to avoid collapse.

Routes and services

  • MSC is expanding its Sentosa loop, providing a direct connection from the Indian ports of Mundra and Nhava Sheva to the US west coast gateways of Long Beach and Oakland.
  • MSC will also restart its Dragon service connecting Asia to Israel, Italy and the south of France. The rotation will be Shanghai – Ningbo – Yantian – Singapore – Ashdod (HCT) – Naples – La Spezia – Genoa – Fos sur Mer – Gioia Tauro – King Abdullah – Singapore – Shanghai.
  • The rail connection between the port of Rotterdam and Frenkendorf and Niederglatt is now direct and no longer passes Neuss in Germany.
  • Lithuania is closing the Stasylos-Byenyakoni rail border with Belarus because of many smuggling cases. It also cancels Cross-Border Cooperation Program with no explanation why.

Other

These are only several changes that occurred in more than 250 bn freight rates across 25 million routes with more than 1 million market players. Maersk files claim against Evergreen

Denmark’s A.P. Moller-Maersk has filed a lawsuit against the owner and operator of the containership Ever Given, which blocked the Suez Canal for six days in 2021, seeking compensation for delays caused by the incident.

“We can confirm that Maersk has filed a claim against Evergreen, the ship’s owner and the vessel’s technical manager at the Danish Maritime and Commercial High Court. The claim is related to the losses Maersk suffered during Ever Given’s blockage of the Suez Canal in March 2021,” a spokesperson told Splash.

The 400-m-long, 20,388 teu Ever Given ran aground in the Suez Canal on March 23, 2021, blocking the key trading artery between Europe and Asia. Hundreds of ships backed up in a queue behind the Ever Given, and some vessels even took an unusual detour, down around the Cape of Good Hope. Maersk did not say how many of its ships were delayed at the time.

Japan’s Shoei Kisen owns Ever Given, which is chartered by the Taiwanese carrier Evergreen. The Copenhagen-based liner giant did not disclose the size of the claim, with local media in Denmark suggesting the total is in excess of $40m

“We cannot confirm the mentioned amount,” Maersk said.

Railways once again to the rescue in earthquake-hit Turkey

The Turkish State Railways (TCDD) have evacuated close to 40,000 people from the earthquake-stricken area in Southern Turkey over the past few days, while they have also dispatched multiple freight trains with goods for the people experiencing the disaster. At the same time, ADY Container sends aid trains to Turkey via the BTK railway line.

Railways have been back in the spotlight for getting people to safety and transporting first-aid commodities from the onset of war in Ukraine one year ago. Back then, it was Ukrainian Railways working around the clock to evacuate civilians, while companies like DB, RCG, PKP, Rénfe, SNCF, Mercitalia, FS Group, and more ensured that humanitarian aid would reach Ukraine by rail.

Now, TCDD is doing the same as Ukrainian Railways, albeit from an earthquake-stricken area. The company has executed 210 evacuation trips to date, getting 39,500 citizens to other areas. On top of that, according to transport minister Adil Karaismailoglu, 33 freight trains with aid goods have reached the area already.

Meanwhile, the first repairs to the 1,275 kilometres of affected railway lines in Kahramanmaraş province have been carried out. Near Fevsipasa in Gaziantep province, repair works are also underway. The line out of the hard-hit port city of Iskenderun in Hatay province is still in operation, enabling citizens to reach Adana, Mersin and Konya.
